Some people call me God. It's not true. This, however, is my gospel. On the 8th day that my mother was successful in labour and threw me into the world there was an almighty thunderstorm. Forked lightening had thrown Leeds into chaos and the fire service were run ragged because at that point they weren't on strike. My mother stood by the window, holding me. Covering my eyes hiding me from a landscape with a futuristic edge. Hiding me from what could have very easily been an omen. She wondered if it was. It could have been. This is a true story. On the day that I was born, Leeds burned. Some people call me God. Only very close friends and I don't know why. Maybe it says something about me. Maybe, more to the point, it says something about them. It says something about the way that religion fails to run our lives now. Take a poser with a few pairs of good shades and call him God. I believe John Lennon said that The Beatles were bigger than Jesus. Is it particularly egotistical to say that as far as I'm concerned, The Beatles have nothing on me? Well apart from a 50% death rate, 25% murder rate and a flair for producing the most beautiful music to ever grace my ears. But still: I'm God according to about 2.5% of the people I know. On the 8th day in November God said: let there be Adam. Let him smoke, let him drink, let him be a cock for most of his adolescent life. Let him be an addict, addicted to most flavours of everything from milk to adrenalin. Let him recover. Let him write. Let him be on the stage. Let him take photographs. Let him teach. Let him learn to love over and over and eventually get it right.
